The Fashion Brand Clinic Podcast - Season 4 Episode 02: Leadership, Message, Community: The Formula for a Fashion Brand People Obsess Over
Hosting my own live event was the most terrifying thing I've ever done in business. Six months before Fashion Marketing Live — the UK's first fashion marketing conference — I was kicking and screaming about the whole thing, convinced I had no business standing on a stage telling anyone anything. Then it sold out in 24 hours. Funny how that works.
I'm still not over it, honestly. But the reason it worked is the same reason some fashion brands build a following that borders on obsession while others slash their prices to 70% off and quietly disappear. It comes down to three things I will not shut up about: leadership, a clear message, and community. Get those three working together and you don't have to chase customers — they come to you.
You can't have a following if you won't lead
Most of us squirm at the word “leader.” I point a little stick at it on stage and watch a room full of brilliant women think, “Who, me? I'm not a leader.” But here's the harsh truth — and I'm known for those — if you're not prepared to be a leader, you can't expect to have a following.
Only 12% of women build a business that turns over six figures. Twelve. When I share that number I always feel a bit sick, because it isn't about ability — it's that we're quietly taught to shy away from growth, from leadership, from taking up space. Think about the brands that lost their way: Debenhams, Topshop. No clear leader, no clear message, and a community they let slip through their fingers. Leadership isn't about bossing people around. As Captain Sandy Yawn — superyacht captain, reality-TV force of nature and one of my absolute icons — put it in the message she recorded for the room: leadership is about creating an environment where people want to follow you.
Your message is the thing other people repeat
Here's what stops most brands filling the gap: they don't actually know what they stand for. And if you don't know what you're saying, nobody can say it for you.
When you're small, word of mouth is everything — but it only works if your message is clear enough to travel. Nike doesn't need to explain itself; you already know the three words. Patagonia puts the planet first and is worth billions. Lucy & Yak turned a clear, joyful point of view into tens of millions in turnover and queues out the door. None of that is an accident. So the one job I set everyone in that room is the one I'll set you: revisit your mission statement. Not something clever hidden in a notebook — something clear that you live out loud. What do you want people to say about you when you're not in the room?
Community first, customers second
People get this backwards. They think you build a community off the back of your customers. It's the other way around: build the community, and those people become your customers.
The founder of HunsNet didn't set out to build an empire — he just asked, out loud, “does anyone else do this weird thing I do?” Turns out around 280,000 people did. That's the whole game: stand for something, say it clearly, and let the people who feel the same gather around you. Back in 2019 the Business of Fashion argued that brands can fill the void left by the decline of religion and eroded faith in institutions. Dramatic? Maybe. But more people wear Nike than voted in the last US election. The gap is real — and your brand can fill it.
Meet Brenda — and why trust beats perfection
There's a voice in your head doing everything it can to stop you being bold. I've named mine Brenda. Naming her matters, because it reminds you that her voice isn't your voice — and you get the final say.
Brenda loves perfection. But perfection is a trap, especially now. When everything looks airbrushed and AI-polished, perfection just makes people wonder if you're real. What's more profitable than perfect? Trust. Even Victoria Beckham's turnaround came down to getting back on an iPhone and being a human being. Embrace the imperfect and you build trust fast — and trust is what people actually buy.
The formula
So here's the magic maths: Leadership + Message + Community = a brand people are genuinely, utterly obsessed with. It's not easy, because being seen is scary. But as Miley Cyrus says, legends get scared too — they just do it anyway.
